MOM'S (Helen Sowders) APPLE PIE WITH HER ICE WATER PIE CRUST

This is my late mother's recipe for apple pie  made with her ice water pie crust.

CRUST:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
2/3 cup Crisco shortening
7 to 8 tbsp ice water

Add salt to flour.  Cut shortening into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter or two knives.  Add ice water gradually until the dough reaches an easy to roll consistency.  Form dough into two balls for 2 crusts and roll out on a floured surface.

FILLING:
3/4 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tbsp cornstarch
6 cups sliced apples
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp butter

Mix the sugar, cinnamon, and cornstarch together.  Toss with the sliced apples and lemon juice.  Line a pie plate with one of the crusts; trim edges.  Place the apple mixture into the prepared pie plate and dot with the butter.  Top with a second crust, seal and crimp edges.  Cut air vents in the top crust.

Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes.  Lower heat to 375 and continue cooking 30-35 minutes until lightly browned and pie is bubbly.  Place a pie shield or folds of aluminum foil over the edges to keep from over browning.

Steve Business Trip to Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Steve was a top insurance agent in the State of Indiana when he worked at Keach and Grove Agency. This picture is from 1973 when he and other agents were flown into Milwaukee, Wisconsin for a meeting at the Milwaukee Insurance Company. He was one of their top agents.

A FAVORITE PASTIME

Cindy Wilson Hart, do you remember how much you enjoyed Colorforms? You loved them at home but you especially enjoyed them on flights when you will little. The airlines used to give them out to little ones on planes.

MY MATERNAL GREAT-GRANDFATHER'S OBITUARY

This is the obituary of my mother's grandpa. He died at my Grandma and Grandpa Hawkins' house in Guthrie, Indiana.

WHO REMEMBERS AUTOGRAPH BOOKS?

Becky and I each got one just like this one year for Christmas. We love them. I'm sure our friends wrote many silly things in them and we were so proud! My grandkids would think it crazy to get one of these today. Technology has taken over.

Sears Christmas Book 1952

Becky and I loved sitting cuddled up on the couch looking through the annual selection of Christmas Wishbooks. In 1952 Becky was two and I was 5. We always had big dreams deciding what we wanted Santa to bring. We also knew to narrow that list down to only a couple of items! We always got the main item we wanted. Somehow, Santa always knew!! I have so many fond Christmas memories.

BEDFORD, INDIANA SQUARE, 1930s

I wasn't born until the forties but I still have found memories of Christmas shopping on the square, visiting Santa and the Toyland at the Fair Store, etc when I was a young child. Being out on cold days like this on the square was exciting. This photo is looking south from 15th and J Streets. I love the pictures of these old cars.

1934 ELECTION

Found this and thought it a fun recollection of the local 1934 election in Lawrence County in Indiana, especially since tomorrow is the national mid-term elections. I especially like the part about losing a bet and pushing another around the downtown square in a wheelbarrow. Also, I enjoyed Mr. Long's campaign expenses. MY DAD 1944

So thankful to my niece, Stacy Ritter, for sending me this picture today. This is my dad Harold Wayne Sowders, on the left, and his cousin Ervin 'Bud" Ritter together in London during their time in England during WWII. What a treasure this is not only for me but for my children and grandchildren.

OH MY! WONDERFUL CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

I loved going to Woolworth's with mom and Becky. We had such fun stores when I was small. I especially loved Toyland at The Fair Store.

STEFFINEE'S COOKIES

Steffinee, like her sister Samantha, loves to bake. She took time to make some pumpkin spice cookies for her papaw and Dustin while she was here.

STEFFINEE VISITS

Steffinee rode the Amtrack Train from OKC to Ft Worth to be here for Samantha's birthday. We had some time to visit her favorite spot in Grapevine on Tuesday before her train departed. She absolutely loves the Grapevine Library.

SAMANTHA TURNS 12

Samantha with gifts on her 12th birthday. She had a swim party with friends the following day.

SAMANTHA BAKES COOKIES FOR YOUTH SERVICE

Samantha is so excited that Pastor Blake asked her to bake cookies to hand out to the visitors at the youth services on Wednesday nights. She loves baking and told me once that she thinks baking is what God wants her to do. She said she thinks God wants her to bake things for others to enjoy so I was glad that her pastor ask her to do this. She has been busy baking and here are some of her efforts. Way to go Samantha.

Just a few of the many.

Proudly displaying her work

5 FOOT BANANA SPLIT

Isabell, Samantha, and Carlos along with friends sharing  one of the 5-foot banana splits after youth service last night. So thankful they stay active in church.
